I have SMF 1.1.2. in combination with Google Adsense.
Using Joomla and Joomla bridge.

The ads displayed on my forum (which you need to register for) are totally irrelevant to the content. How can I let Google Adsense screen my forum and place ads which matter to my members?

Hmm, the ads go by content of the site if I am not mistaken. Posting relevent information to your site in your posts might help. Maybe installing the tags mod from SMF would also help.

I am new to Adsense. Are the 'crawlers' capable of entering my forum, which is password protected? (you have to register)

No I don't think they will be able to.
